It’s been a huge year for Food for Thought – the festival has been recognised as a case study for the Heart Foundations Healthy Active by Design Program, presented at the UWA Social Impact Festival: ‘Paddock to Plate Redesigning and Realigning Our Food Systems’ and to top it all off celebrated it’s 3rd consecutive year in October 2017! Once again the festival showcased the finest produce from the Great Southern, while highlighting sustainable food systems for the health of the land and the community. The free community festival returned to the Albany Town Square on Sunday October 8th with an estimated 2500 people attending on the day. 6 events were held over 5 days and all associated events were hugely successful. Presented by Sustain: The Australian Network in partnership with Community Food Events, the 2017 Food for Thought Festival hosted a range of local and international keynote speakers, interactive workshops and fine dining held at locations throughout the Great Southern and Wheatbelt, from October 4 to 8. The Festival unites West Australian communities in celebration of the local food economy – it’s people, products and the possibilities for growing a healthy, regenerative, and fair food system. The Festival concluded with a family-friendly celebration of food culture in the Albany Town Square on Sunday, October 8, from 10am to 4pm.
Festival organiser, Evelyn Collin, said the events highlight the importance and the benefits of transitioning to resource-smart food systems, which align with many of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. “The festival is a celebration of all the elements within our community that are supporting this transition,” Ms Collin said. “It is imperative that we continue to localise our systems and take ownership of and responsibility for this transition. “The food we grow, harvest, process, trade, transport, store sell and consume is the essential connecting thread between people, prosperity, and the planet.”
The Festival seeks to increase community awareness around food security, the impact of food systems on individual and community health and wellbeing, the importance of soil health for both urban and commercial production, and the impact of well grown food on human nutrition.
Dr Nick Rose, executive director of Sustain, said this annual event has put the discussion around sustainable, resilient, healthy and thriving food systems front and centre in the Great Southern and beyond. “With an outstanding program of keynote presenters, hands-on workshops and networking activities, as well as a celebration of the wonderful food and wine from the region, the 2017 Food for Thought Festival is wonderful occasion not to be missed.”
Sustain works together with governments, the community-health sector, research institutions and other key food-system stakeholders across the public, private and community sectors to support the development of food systems that are fair, connected, healthy and sustainable.
The Free Community Festival on Sunday, October 8, featured market stalls, free children’s entertainment, and tent talks with a range of local fair food identities sharing their stories. Live music was provided by Soulin’ Wild, a group of six talented musicians, who are all originally from Albany plus local music acts The Easterly’s with David Rastrick, Jazztrix Duo and a special appearance by the Shantymen. Other Festival highlights included the Wholefood from the Ground Up Master Class with natural food chef and esteemed author Jude Blereau, the Fervor Long Table Dinner in the picturesque Porongurup range, and The Business of the Soil Field Day in Arthur River.

Tent Talks are the place for groups or business’s to deliver short, powerful conversations that inspire and inform festival goers. Sessions are from 10 – 20 mins long, including time for a short Q&A with the audience.
The tent will assist in building relationships with your community and enhancing the communities knowledge about who you are, why you do what you do and what you have to offer the community. It is a place to bring visibility to the challenges and issues of our food system. And offer hope and inspiration for the future.
